With just five games as a member of the West Michigan Whitecaps (13-12) under his belt, righthander Jordan Smith (3-0, 3.86 ERA) got the nod to kick off a three-game home stand against the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (13-15) at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Smith handled five innings for West Michigan, allowing three runs off nine hits, striking out four against Wisconsin. Another big night submitted from Whitecaps outfielder Rashad Brown led the West Michigan offense by contributing three hits, including his third double on the year, as well as scoring a pair of runs. Will Allen and Derek Hill each added a double of their own.

In relief, Trent Szkutnik combined with 20-year-old flame thrower Gerson Moreno to work a scoreless final four innings of the night behind Smith to secure the second consecutive victory for the Whitecaps.

With the win, Moreno locks his third save and Smith is credited with his third win for West Michigan.

Final: West Michigan Whitecaps 5, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3

Coming up next: West Michigan lefty Matt Hall (2-0, 0.83ERA) gets the nod to start game two of the home stand against Wisconsin righthander John Perrin (1-0, 2.70 ERA) and the Timber Rattlers slated for 7:00pm at Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday night.
