As any pitcher will tell you, no matter what point of the season you may find yourself in, the task remains the same. Perform, win, advance. For West Michigan righty Kyle Dowdy (7-2, 2.62 ERA), Sunday's outing against the visiting Burlington Bees (48-52), would go into the books as a career first for the 23-year-old. Dowdy, Detroit's 2015 12th round selection entered Sunday afternoon with four wins in his previous six appearances with the West Michigan Whitecaps (52-42) and as onlookers would quickly notice, the pattern would continue.

Averaging roughly 9.1 pitches per inning, Dowdy successfully held Burlington to just five hits, walking one and striking out three in what would play out as an 82-pitch complete game shutout, a career-first for the right-hander and just what the Whitecaps were hoping for.

At the plate, West Michigan gave Dowdy plenty of support coming off three-hit nights from outfielder Rashad Brown, who has now hit successfully in 11 of his last 12 games with West Michigan and Jose Zambrano, as well as another two-hit outing from Will Maddox; currently leading West Michigan in overall hits this season with 130.

The complete game performance secured the seventh win on the year for Dowdy, posting the third win for West Michigan in their last five games*.

With a first-half playoff wild card slot already secured, West Michigan stands third in the overall Midwest League Eastern Division standings behind the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs affiliate) and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays affiliate).

Final: West Michigan Whitecaps 8, Burlington Bees 0
*Last five games include 15-inning, nine-run tie against Peoria on July 22.

Coming up next: West Michigan will look to take two of three as they conclude their three-game home series on Monday evening at 7:00pm at Fifth Third Ballpark.
