After taking the twin-bill against the South Bend Cubs (0-3) on Friday evening, the West Michigan Whitecaps (3-0) entered Saturday on the road in hopes of continuing their success.

Whitecaps righty Spenser Watkins (1-0, 0.00 ERA) got the start, marking his Low-A debut for 2017. Watkins hurled an impressive five and a third innings of scoreless work, allowing four hits, two walks and striking out five.

Tigers 2016 14th round pick Austin Athmann broke loose at the plate, tacking up three hits of the seven West Michigan hits on the day, while outfielder Cam Gibson finished the day 2-for-5 with a triple, a home run and a pair of runs scored.

In relief for Watkins, righthander Alfred Gutierrez added another five strikeouts against South Bend to close the door and secure his first Save for 2017.

Coming up next: West Michigan returns to Four Winds Field on Sunday afternoon for the finale of their five-game stretch against the Cubs behind 21-year-old righty Anthony Castro.
